Turn on Google backup for device data, verify that photos are syncing separately, and copy irreplaceable files somewhere you control before a repair, reset or phone change.

Quick answer: Open Settings, tap Google, then All services and Backup.

Steps: Back Up an Android Phone

  1. Open Settings, tap Google, then All services and Backup.
  2. Choose the Google Account that should own the backup and turn backup on.
  3. Tap Back up now while the phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.
  4. Open Google Photos and check its backup status separately.
  5. Copy downloads, recordings and authenticator recovery codes to a second safe location.

Before you finish

  • A device backup is not a browsable copy of every file.
  • Work profiles, sideloaded apps and some app data may not transfer.
  • Verify the backup date before erasing or trading in a phone.

If the menu is different

Use the search box at the top of Settings and search for the key control in
this guide. Pixel uses Google's labels; Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus and other
manufacturers may move the same control or rename one level of the menu. Check
the support page for your exact model before using a reset or erase command.
